Super Bowl Betting

The biggest game in the NFL season is also the biggest game of the entire year for bookmakers and bettors. Super Bowl betting has become the most important part of the year for sportsbooks in Las Vegas and around the world. The success of an entire year can revolve around this one game. Nobody knows the exact figure, but Super Bowl XXXVIII between New England and Carolina was estimated to have taken in between two and three billion dollars. Just a fraction of that, 81 million, was bet in Las Vegas. Bookmakers held a very nice percentage of that total with profits reportedly in the 10 to 15 percent range. These numbers show the popularity of the game and the growing popularity of offshore gaming. I’ll look at the fascination everyone has with the Super Bowl and the many aspects of how to bet the big game.

The Super Bowl is a betting experience all by itself and should be treated as such. Nearly 90% of the people betting on the Super Bowl are not professional gamblers. It is the one game that everyone plays whether they know anything about it or not. The game is usually the most watched television program of the entire year and it takes on a life of its own. The line on the game is always tilted toward the favorite and the over. The linemaker knows that the public wants to bet the favorite and the over, and he adjusts the line accordingly. It is similar to Monday night football but on a grander scale. Always keep that in mind when making your Super Bowl bet.

When betting on the Super Bowl you want to make your wager early if you like the favorite or the over. As I said earlier, the public loves to bet that way, and the line will continually move in that direction. If you like the underdog, or the under, it is best to wait until the day of the game. Most professionals like to say that the Super Bowl is just another game. It’s not. Whether we like it or not, the game can make or break a season for both bettors and bookmakers alike. It can’t be treated like just another game. If you are the bookmaker, you are trying to survive the onslaught of money on the game and hoping it goes your way. If you are the bettor, you are trying to cap off a successful season or trying to bail out of a rotten one. Remember that 90% figure again. Most of the money is not coming from the pros. That can be very dangerous for  in a one game situation. And the Super Bowl is just that, one game. You can handicap until you are blue in the face but it doesn’t mean a thing when you have just one game to choose from. Most people have to play the game. I’ll state some Super Bowl trends in a future article to give you some guidelines but the biggest tip I can give you is to go with your gut. This is a very public game and a lot of the statistics and trends can be thrown out the window. Trust your instinct.

One area of interest that has grown by leaps and bounds for Super Bowl betting is the propositions. Nearly every sportsbook in Las Vegas and around the world post numerous propositions on the Super Bowl. You will see everything from who wins the coin flip to how many challenges a team uses. One of the most famous proposition bets of all time happened in 1986 when William “the refrigerator” Perry scored a TD to crush the sportsbooks. Odds were posted as to whether or not Perry would score a TD and ranged anywhere from 10-1 to 20-1. When Perry scored the books took an absolute bath. We see a ton of props every year on the Super Bowl but the research is much more intense and the lines more solid than back in 1986. Nowadays you will see propositions on the Super Bowl that take other sports into consideration. You will see goals scored in hockey matched up against TD passes a QB throws. You will find NBA players and their statistics matched up against running backs or receivers and their statistics. The proposition board has become a game in itself and is something to look at when betting on the Super Bowl.

We are most likely going to bet on the Super Bowl every year. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind when you are making that bet. It is just one game so trust your instinct over anything else. Find some kind of prop that you really like that can keep you in action all day. An example would be to bet on the last player in the game to score a TD. That keeps you interested until the game’s final play and gives you the chance to turn a small wager into a nice return. In a future article I will go over the many Super Bowl betting trends and get into more of what to look for when betting on the world’s biggest game.
